The spiny lizard relaxing

Sunday, December 31, 2006 | 0 comments

When Esme and I were walking near the town of El Limón Totalco, Veracruz, I noticed a particular pile of volcanic rock. I said to Esme that it looked to me like the perfect hiding place for a snake, so I carefully removed some stones, and we found a big spiny lizard (Sceloporus species).

The big lizard clumsy walked away. Esme tried to grab it carefully, but the lizard turned around and hissed angrily at her. I did also an attempt, and managed to get the spiny lizard on my hand. After a few photos it seemed to relax. Moreover, in the above photo it looks like it's quite happy and even enjoying itself.

After a few more photos we let this beautiful specimen go, and it slowly walked away from us, back into its hiding place, which I had put back as I had found it while Esme held the lizard.
