Software recommendations
Below follows an overview of software I like to use, and which
I recommend. Currently there are 3 sections, one for Windows XP, one
for Ubuntu Linux, and one for Windows Mobile. The latter (WM 5) I run on
my Dell Axim X51v, a great PDA (why did Dell stop selling those?).
On Windows XP Professional
- Mozilla Firefox: At the end of 2002 I gave a new browser
a try: Phoenix. In 2003 this browser got renamed to Mozilla Firebird, and in
2004 to Mozilla Firefox. In 2002 I got hooked, and has been using what is now
called Firefox both professionally and just for fun. The features of this
browser, besides tabbed browing, I use the most are smart keywords,
and live bookmarks. Another Firefox feature I like a
lot is the support of add-ons. I currently have the following add-ons (also called extensions)
installed: Copy URL+, Greasemonkey,
Flashblock, It's All Text!, Live HTTP Headers, and Web Developer.
- TextPad: I use this versatile editor for most of my programming work. Since I keep
all my work under version control I've integrated TortoiseSVN in TextPad,
which is an excellent Subversion client. Also, I've written a Quick Reference card
for this editor, check it out if you want to get the most out of it.
- MSN Messenger - used to stay in touch with friends and family.
- Bulent's screen recorder - great for recording webcam sessions.
On Ubuntu Linux
On Windows Mobile
- PocketXpdf: I use this great program
to read PDF files on my Dell Axim X51v.
