When the animal had enough of me taking photos it hid in a hole in the ground just outside the picture, originally covered by the same stone. I guess it's the burrow of the animal, and the reason for us seeing the vinegaroon so easily was that it was still eating the cricket it had captured.
When it was gone from view we could clearly smell vinegar, so I probably had annoyed it more then enough by carefully prodding it with a piece of grass to make it pose for the camera.
After this find we noticed similar holes under other stones, but we didn't want to dig and destroy the possible burrows, so no idea how many vinegaroons we didn't see that day.
