The Scholar service created by Google searches in a much broader set of information compared to CiteSeer. It also can give results for books, and you can even look up which library has the book available (limited to the US and Canada at the moment).
You can restrict your search to an author, or a publication, or specify a date range using advanced scholar search. This search engine is one I recommend adding a keymark to Firefox for.
