Today, while blogging, I decided to listen to some Yello, and without giving it much thought I picked one of my favourite albums by Yello: "Pocket Universe".
Back in the late 90's, I am not sure if it was 1997; the year of the album's release, my good friend Simon gave me twelve mp3 files: Pocket Universe by Yello, including the bonus track "To the Sea (Steve B-Zet remix)". And after a few listening sessions I was sold.
In the summer, if I recall correctly, I bought the actual CD in Utrecht, the city of my alma mater; Utrecht University. I played this concept album a lot in those years, and then somewhat forgot about it.
So today it was about time to listen to it again, and again, and again. I think it's still in my top 3 of Yello studio albums. The other two albums are "Stella" (1985), and "One Second" (1987).
The first time I heard about Yello, I think, was back in the early 80's when "I Love You" got a lot of air play in the Netherlands. I bought the 7" vinyl single and a few years later, give or take, I bought "1980-1985 The New Mix in One Go", also on vinyl; a great album which I have played a lot and which I highly recommend if you want to discover the "older" Yello.
My favorite tracks on "Pocket Universe" are: More, On Track, Pan Blue, and Resistor. I think the album is well balanced and certainly doesn't feel dated. But I guess that's Yello for you; their music is, to me at least, timeless.
