Today I made a fire in our fireplace because it was a cold day in Xalapa. Another reason for making the fire was to get rid of the dry wood on the grate in the fireplace which both Esme and I considered a good hiding place for scorpions. Before I set the wood on fire I carefully checked each piece for scorpions, but I didn't find any.

Four days ago Esme had been stung by a scorpion, so we had a good reason to limit the number of hiding places for scorpions in our house. Hence what better way to burn one potential hiding place in the fireplace on a cold day. Sadly, the wood was of a bad quality: it didn't smell nice and burned fast.
